Early war , lots of fuel cans ( and 200 lt drums ) , extra tarps ,tools and parts in wooden boxes , as they were out racing their support supply with the Blitzkrieg . Later they added track as extra protection as each side got larger guns . Very little room inside tanks for crew kit , mostly a small pack for each crew member , plus water bottles and personal weapons , so extra kit carried outside .IRC the German, as did the British , had certain things that had to be carried in certain places ,ie , turret stowage box contains , 5 rain coats , 5 sleeping bags , 2 days hard rations , etc , etc .( You can find various Stowage Sketches for British vehicles but its hard to find ones for the Germans ) Also all tools had a specific spot on the vehicle , so it could be found in the pitch dark or by a new crewman as all vehicles of that type , Panther A for example , have all tools , fire extingishers , etc in the same spot . Most pictures of knocked out or captured vehicles lack gear as the crew took it when they bailed or the enemy " liberated " it .
