The long-awaited M4A1 plastic test shots finally arrived on our desk at the studio.

When these two sprues are done, our M4 Sherman project will be completed... then we might be able to start the M3 and M7 projects. Hmmm...

Yeah but the shots of the M4A1 sprues don’t have it. (Unless I’m missing it or it’ll be on another sprue we’ve not seen yet). It’s on the M4A4 Hull sprue.

(Edit) ooh is K05 a 76mm gun for use with small turrets?

So, a thought occurred to me relating to our friend in Nuremberg up there. Is there any possibility that the 3-part bolted differential cover might be made available as a separate resin part/pack? As it stands the only way to get it will be to buy an M4A4 kit (and using the diff cover from that renders the rest of the kit unbuildable as an accurate M4A4 as they all had the 3-part cover).

Basically I’m hugely looking forward to getting an M4A1 kit so I’ll be able to have all the major US Army variants covered in my collection but it’d like to build it like the one in the picture. I’d happily pay a few pounds for a part but not a whole kit I’d end up mostly trashing.

Inspired by this I made my own version as a google sheet that also covers suspension variants and the composites (which always get rolled into M4 which is a shame as it’s my favourite version). No prod numbers but there to visualise how when the main visual changes went in and out of production.

Which track options and turrets are coming in each kit? Presumably the first kit is with the "small turret" sprue and the second with the "T23 turret" sprue? Does the Large Hatch kit come with the HVSS and extended VVSS track options (like the M4A3)?

For UK stockists, see also Battlefield Hobbies (Daventry), and Firestorm Games (Cardiff, Swindon, Newport). both sell online, but dav isn't far away from me and I'm in cardiff a few times a year.

Another UK place (Rk Studio) just announced they were stopping stocking due to wholesale prices going up with the distribution change.

A sticky "retailers" thread, split out by country, would be a phenomenal idea.

The Staghound continues to serve into the 1980s (for example, the Arab-Israeli war in 1948 and the Lebanon crisis in 1958) which makes a better choice than the Daimler or the Dingo as our first Allies armoured car.

Not the line of reasoning I would have chosen, but that's why you make the kits and I just buy them.

This makes me fully "that guy" but I can't resist pointing out this is actually your second Allied armoured car.
It's an understandable mistake, it's been ages since the last one was released.

Third isn’t it? Greyhound is out. M3 Scout car is between test shot and production, and now this one...

I never finished this thread, for a couple of reasons.

1: I'd forgotten to take photos of an important step
and
2: I'd thrown out my spare tracks, so the work was academic.

However, a local store had a sale on, and I'd decided I wanted an earlier m4a3(76)w that would be more suitable for late summer 44 so off we went again.

I've amended the first post with some photos of the chassis mods.

As far as the intake trunking is concerned, at the time I did the original assembly, I didn;t have the kit so had to make a couple of guesses.

I put magnets in the recess that's the underside of the M4's air intake. this turned out to be a waste as the wading kit here is a nice snug fit (though not tight enough to hurt the paint, it seems). also, if it wasn;t, the trunking sits in a place where it would be very hard to place magnets without being visible (I thought the chimney was directly abouve the air intake "hump", but it's not, it's aft of it)

On the rear, I put two magnets on the inside of the rear plate when assembling the kit.

I magnetised the air cleaners with 3mm mags and the can be attached and detached at will.

I made an adapter plate for the rear trunking out of plasticard and glued two magnets to that. this nicely holds the trunking in place.

for this M4 comp, I;m going to see if I can work another pair of mags under the engine deck so stowage can be attached and detached.

I'll do some more updates with details on the M4a3 build as we go.

Is the 76mm the plastic one from the kit?
After asking around no 76mm jumbos had muzzle breaks except cobra king who was refurbished later on.

The one shown is the plastic one from the M4A3 kit.  We probably will include a 76mm barrel without the muzzle brake.  We need to figure out a way to make sure the 76mm barrel is straight throughout production.

Is there a need for that? The builder will need to use the M4A3 (76) kit as the base so it has the right engine deck and the extended-edge-connector tracks, so they'll have both versions of the 76 barrel off the 76mm turret sprue anyway
