The anti-tank obstacles and Rubicon's hints suggest some kind of gun emplacement.

That's right!
They did not say its a "new vehicle project", so it might not be a vehicle.

We did mention in HINT #1:  This will be a RESIN based project and is going to be one of the largest pieces of machinery on a wargame table!

A radar station?  A V2 launcher?

It's the connection with the beach obstacles that's confusing me...

Action News: The hedgehogs are going to be the extras for this coastal defense fort.

No not really. Even though this could be resin aw well as a piece that can only be used in a certain scenario, I wouldn't consider a coastal defense fort to be considered "largest pieces of machinery".

Besides, the coastal defense fort pictured above is from Airfix and is in 1:72 scale (or was it 1:76th?)

The title mentions Allies, and that is a German installation.
My guess is a landing craft.

Rubicon has no vehicles suitable as bases for Hobart's Funnies (okay BARV).

Or some fire support.

Did you get a chance to go to HMS Belfast when  you were over here?

IRC Empress makes a German U Boat in 28mm, so why not a Destroyer like the HMS Belfast ?  . Don't know if I could afford it ,or where I would put , but it would be cool to have

The coastal defense fort was just me trying to be playful.

As for an Allied item that will go with hedgehogs as well as be a "largest pieces of machinery", the only guess I can think of at this time is some sort of landing craft. Probably one  for tanks like an LCT (landing craft, tank, or tank landing craft). Even though this will fit the "largest pieces of machinery" hint, it just might be too big for a project.

Waiting for another hint from RM that will give us a clue as to if it will be a vehicle or not.

Did you get a chance to go to HMS Belfast when  you were over here?

Yes.

I doubt it will be an LCT. Landing Craft, Tanks were 152 feet long and 29 feet wide.

Far more likely it would be an LCVP. Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel were a mere 36 feet 3" long, and 10 feet, 10" wide.  Could carry a platoon of 36 men, or a vehicle up to 6,000 pounds (Jeeps and such).

Or one of the versions of the LCM. Landing Craft Mechanized. These were used from early days (Norway, Dieppe) onward. Came in a variety of configurations, capable of holding various loadouts.  LCM-1 and LCM-2 could carry a 13 ton tank or a lot of troops, They were 45 feet long and 14 feet wide. LCM-3 was a bit longer (50 feet) and could carry a 30,000 pound vehicle.

Since Rubicon now have worked on LVTs (which were 26 feet long and 10 feet, 8" wide, next step up from that would be an LCVP I would think. About the same width, nearly twice the length.

M12 self propelled artillery.  You would just need a upgrade kit for the M4 chassis they already have.
Sure a Grant/Lee kit could be in the works.  You could get an M31 out of it too.
Then again how about the 155mm Long Tom artillery and the M4 towing vehicle.

Wait, the M7 Priest which can also be made into the Canadian Kangaroo Armored Personnel Carrier.

Though a towed 105 mm howitzer or 155 mm howitzer would make those cargo trucks more useful.

We have several hints from Rubicon:

It is for the Allies (note: didn't say Americans or British or Canadians, etc., but "Allies", implying multiple nations used it)
Hedgehogs are the "cover" for the project (I think that implies sea landings)
Largest piece of machinery (not "weapon") they have done
Only useful in specific scenarios (again, I take this to mean sea landings)
It will be done in resin

So the above rules out any form of tank or tank destroyer or self-propelled artillery, as they are all weapons.  I really think it must be a landing craft of some sort.

Yes, I agree.  And it's something that can be done (well) in resin - with the inevitable metal details (is it just me, or are resin/metal hybrid kits the worst of both worlds?).
