Title: SdKfz 7 Prime Mover 8t - Easy Conversions 190322
Post by: Rubicon Models on October 26, 2016, 09:01:44 pm
A new project in the making...  What is this vehicle?

Looks like an unarmoured half track.

SdKfz 7...
So options for tractor and flak vehicles.

The given image could be any of the softskin h/ts from the SdKfz 6 to the humungus Famo 9 (is it a SdKfz 8 prime mover for an 88mm flak?) & I'd welcome any & all of them, particularly if, as UVS stated, flak variants were in the offing.

The design of the drive sprocket, shape of the mudguard and position of the engine vents don't match the Famo.   It could be an SdKfz 8.  But I'm going to stick with the SdKfz 7 because I bet Rubicon are planning an 88 to go with it.

If an 88 was being built with it having an option for the wheeled trailer would be awesome. Always like it when they fired it from there instead of deploying it properly

it should be an sdkfz 11 gun tractor half track, what a lot of people do not realise is that every german halftrack has unique wheel paterns, the sd11/251 has round holes on the road wheels.

Right, and it's one of the many reasons the Germans lost the war - imagine having your basic gun tractors rendered immobile because you don't have any spares of the right kind of roadwheel.  But the roadwheels on the SdKfz 7 and 8 are the same.

If it's an SdKfz 7, it would be great if it included optional parts for the late production version.

Not much work had been done with this unnamed project.
Had been busy trying to wrap up all outstanding projects,
but we are getting there...

More half tracks are always good!

Personally rooting for a SdKfz 10 first, as (weirdly imo) its almost impossible to find in 1/56 and it was one of the most widely produced and used of the half tracks.

But really it would be having the variants like the 10/4 and the 7/1 or 2 in plastic that would be awesome :)

Going to give it a proper name if you can identify this...

Superb addition to the range.

Any idea when this is likely to be scheduled into the production?

Definatly up for one of these as a tow for my flak88 and another as a quad flakwaggon.

Cheers

This is just the very preliminary drawing. Still need to take time to double check on historical accuracy, then touch up on details, then work on the moulding angles... will take a long while!

We have not update this project for a while.  Reason was we had to redo most of the 3d drawings
due to a design flaw related to an incorrect blueprint.  After two months of rework, we now have
a rather accurate representation of the prime mover!

it's time to merge them into a new variant - the SdKfz 7/1, enjoy!!

This looks excellent.  It would look great with a crew in winter gear, like the Tamiya version.  And perhaps optional parts for the armoured cab?

I repeat my earlier concern about the fragility of the barrels.

There will be no armoured cab variant from us as it requires major changes to the standard SdKfz 7 as well as an extra mould to the product.  Furthermore, it will not be too difficult to kitbash our standard version to an armoured one by a seasoned modeller.

I repeat my earlier concern about the facility of the barrels.

There will be two sets of barrels similar to what we did for the M2 Brownings MG.  At least this is what we have planned...

Make some minor changes to the design to ease commercial
production and build assembly.  The overall outlook had not
changed much...

The SdKfz 7/1 was a standard SdKfz 7 halftrack mounted with a special superstructure to allow installation of a fully traversible 20mm Flakvierling 38. The Flakvierling mounted four 20mm Flak 38 guns and had maximum rate of fire of 1800 rounds per minute. Though intended for anti-aircraft use, it was also effective against ground targets.

Looks great , Don't forget an ammunition trailer or lots of extra clips for the guns . These babies went through ammo like a hot knife through butter . There are different trailers , Sonder Anhanger ( special trailer ) 56 for the 20 mm and SA 57 for the  37 mm guns , but in this scale you should be able to get away with making a generic one  , I won't tell  :D

Here are some preliminary sculpts... a few common bodies with multiple heads and arms options.  Shown here are DAK personnel.

The crew figures look good, except for the field caps which look too high and the peaks are much too large. If you look at WWII photographs, DAK field caps mostly look quite squashy, casual, and with smallish peaks. This is why I had to swap Perry heads onto my BMW R75 crew. These caps just don't have the right look to them for the DAK rank and file.

To coincide with the 88mm FlaK 36/37 3D drawing completion, the SdKfz 7 enters its TS1 Plastic stage... All ready for test assembly!

This kit is not only a basic SdKfz 7, we have included expansion components for you to build a SdKfz 7/1 or 7/2 with minimal efforts too!  When you are going to buy a 1/56 kit, think Rubicon first!

Nice.

Supplying the pedestal base is a nice feature, great for scratch builds as well as the flak vehicles.

Now where can I get some suitable "period" looking SAMs?

Smurf , Bronco has a couple of WW2 German rockets in 1/35 , Might be a good place to look for ideas

Could also scratch one of those Nubelwerfer launchers like used on the armoured Maulteir , or how about re purposing the Katyusha mount from the Studebaker Deuce

Nice.

I photographed an X-4 at the National Space Centre, not quite as dramatic as a Rheintochter.

Maybe Heer46 would be interested in a multi launcher on the SDKFZ 7?

Easy Conversions using an SdKfz 7 half-track (280065) and two upcoming Q2/19 releases - 2cm Flakvierling 38 AA gun (280073) and 3.7cm Flak 43 AA cannon (280074).

The SdKfz 7 comes standard with an optional rear flatbed platform and round gun mount. These can be combined with the two upcoming releases to convert your half-track into an SdKfz 7/1 or SdKfz 7/2 without the need for any conversion skills.

The 2cm Flakvierling 38 also comes with a trailer that can be used as a normal SdAh 51 carriage trailer for the gun or as a SdAh 52 ammunition carrier as an on-tow trailer.

We simply take care of the conversion hassle for you. You just buy the two kits (or three, or four) and then put them together!

I'm also going to guess the conversion kits will also allow you to make a stand alone or towed AA gun?

The two upcoming kits (1) 2cm Flakvierling 38 AA gun (280073) and (2) 3.7cm Flak 43 AA cannon (280074) are basically standalone AA gun/cannon that both come with a trailer and gun crew.  You can also turn them into a mounted variant using the SdKfz 7 half-track kit (280065).

How about adding an armored cab conversion kit? That would complete the true options for this model line.

Even if it is in resin only - btw the same could be done for a armoured cab for the opel (sdkfz 305)
