Title: US 37mm M3 AT Gun - 3D Prototype 190614
Post by: Rubicon Models on June 10, 2019, 01:31:55 pm
With the start of our Dodge WC-55 M6 Fargo project, the M3 is naturally the next project to follow...

The 37mm Gun M3 is the first dedicated anti-tank gun fielded by US forces in numbers during WW2. Introduced in 1940, it became the standard AT gun of the US infantry with its size enabling it to be pulled by a jeep. However, the continuing improvement of German tanks quickly rendered the 37mm ineffective and, by 1943, it was being gradually replaced in the European and Mediterranean theatres by the more powerful British-developed 57mm Gun M1. In the Pacific, where the Japanese tank threat was less significant, the M3 remained in service until the end of the war.

Like many other light anti-tank guns, the M3 was widely used in the infantry support role and as an anti-personnel weapon, firing high-explosive and canister rounds.

The M3 vehicle-mounted variant was used on the Dodge WC-55 M6 Fargo.

It's not just you.  And there's also the 17 pounder.  The 37mm is probably the least useful of the Allied anti-tank guns.  The 2-pdr and 6-pdr/57mm were far more important, without taking into account the Soviet anti-tank weapons (which were as important as their tanks).  But it's a start, and has the benefit of Rubicon's experience with all the German artillery.

17 pounder and the Bofors 40mm AA of course.

I have only just noticed in the Bolt Action V1 book an inexperienced six pounder (medium ATG) is much more expensive than a Regular 17 pounder. I think there is a leading one missing from the point cost ^___^

Nice!!!

Looking forward to this kit. I hope that this kit will be the first in a long line of allied AT-Guns.

Will the skids be able to be modeled in either the up or down position?
In the picture, they are shown in the up position, but sometimes they were placed in a down position when deployed for firing.

The 57mm gun M1 and a QF-6pdr in the same kit! The good thing about the British QF 6-Pdr is that it can be marketed as an American or British AT-Gun because the American 57mm gun M1 was a very close copy of the British QF 6-Pdr. I'm positive that Rubicon can catch two fish with only one hook with a combo kit. By making the kit with the option to assemble either the British QF 6-Pdr or the American 57mm gun M1, this would make the kit very marketable. And maybe, just maybe, the extra bonus pieces to make the American (or British) Paratrooper version of the gun. Lots of potential for this kit.

The prototype of this little AT gun is completed.  Now awaiting digital sculpting of the gun crew!

Just like your 37mm Pak36, your M3 37mm AT-gun is looking very good.
Keep up the good work.

Are those the same tires we find on the Jeep model?

Very nice looking 37mm. It will be another buy for me. My US troops need more artillery and anti tank weapons.

Please be sure to also include a USMC crew... the M3 AT gun was used way longer in the Pacific by both the USMC and the US Army.

Painted samples of the gun crew for our plastic 37mm M3 AT gun...

These figures look good, though as a wargamer I do have to ask are they plastic/multipose? Wondering if more dynamic/combat suitable poses might be possible.

Full disclosure; I will likely never purchase this kit, unless I ever get to my fantasy USMC army in which case I wouldn't be using these figs anyway.

While the figures look great , I would rather have a more combat posed crew like  you included in your German anti-tank gun kits . Most of us are going to be using this gun in a war game , and although nice looking , casual posed figures just don't "work".  Maybe a set of plastic  sitting / standing / casual posed figures ( say 10 - 12 in a box ) could be released for all combative  nations , I sure could use a few figures of that type for diorama purposes .

They do look more like they should be posing by some German hardware.

Are these a gun crew or some sort of a survey team?

I'm just going to come out and just say this. These figure poses are uninspiring. Especially when compared to the gun crew poses you get with the Rubicon Models German anti-tank gun kits, which hve more fitting poses.

Even though they don't look like a gun crew, especially a crew in action, the figures themselves look good.

Also, I fear that the uninspiring gun crew will hurt sales of the US M3 37mm AT gun model kit.
This of course might cause hesitation for Rubicon Models to make more Allied AT gun model kits.

I agree with what others have said. The figures look great but I would much rather prefer figures in more "dynamic" action poses.

Hopefully Rubicon will have multiple sets of figures. This first set (which are obviously aimed at diorama makers), and an action set, aimed at gamers.

An action set will also be welcomed by those diorama makers as well and not just aimed for gamers.

Makes a change.
