Being the first Russian 6x4 truck and based upon the the famous 4x2 "Polutorka" GAZ-AA, the first GAZ-AAAs left the production halls of the "Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod" at the end of 1934. It proved as robust and reliable as its smaller counterpart and stayed in production until 1943 with a total of 37,000 built.
Its chassis served as the base for many tasks, among them as AA truck carrying the 37mm 61-K gun, as self-propelled 76mm field gun (SU-12), as ambulance and mobile workshop. The GAZ-AAA even appeared in an armoured version as the BA-6 and BA-10.
Our aim is to create a basic 2 sprue plastic kit which will serve as a base for conversion and kitbashing. We have no release date for this kit as it is still under the 3D drawing phase. We will update her progress on FB as often as possible.
-
yes 8)
-
Excellent, no idea what I would use it for though (Back of Beyond transport is a possibility).
I hope you will continue to post updates here as not everyone is on Facebook.
-
Bystriej, bystriej! Wee need those trucks for the front, comerades!
-
:)
-
After 3 months of basically no update, the GAZ-ZZZ 3D drawing is almost completed.
Now awaiting check on accuracy and compare with historical references. 3D prototyping
is next...

It looks fine. I do wonder if another Soviet truck is a good idea so soon after the Studebaker. It's a rather ordinary looking vehicle, so it's main appeal is to early war period Soviet players. I think there are other non-tank vehicles that would be more popular - such as armoured cars.
-
This is an early war base kit for many things to come... a BA-6 or BA-10 armoured car, a Maxim M4M, and lastly with a "Katyusha" setup. This is an important vehicle for the Soviets in game terms.
-
Looks good. I hope this is the sales success it deserves to be.

I'm sure you know your market. Just wondering if there aren't more compelling subjects, considering the current heavy focus on transports and German subjects.
-
I understand where you are coming from Pinky. Selfishly I can see this truck trundling across Poland in September 1939 and therefore it gets a tick from me.
My concern would be the heavy emphasis on crew sitting on tanks. Personally I think if you are sitting on a lot of expensive armour where bullets and shrapnel is flying around you probably deserve what you get (open topped vehicles excepted where they need observable crew). Personally I'd prefer to see the vehicles of all nationalities get priority as there are many competent figure manufacturers out there already. However I realise Rubicon understands its market better than me.
-
From our viewpoint, there are already enough tanks out there to fill a tabletop, softskins are either rare or the quality is really bad. We are just filling in that market with a few popular trucks or light vehicles. We are still working on tanks... lots of them too!
PS: These trucks are important for our next year's line up ;)
-
BA-10 Yes Please :)
-
Are there major differences between the GAZ and the Ford trucks (you mention it is based on the Ford) ? I was wondering if that was an option?
-
Agreed, there are enough tanks out there to fill a tabletop but I think I'm right in saying most of them in 1/56 scale are fairly generic. Tanks are merely Sherman's or long or short barrel Panzer IV's without much attempt to differentiate different variants. Rubicon sets a higher standard in this regard.
The family of vehicles set to follow this truck sound very interesting.
-
The GAZ AA ( single rear axle , AAA double rear axle ) was a licensed copy of the Ford , just look up pictures of 30s Ford trucks . I'm sure as the war went on the Russians changed the design to save time , money and material ( early war - metal cab , late war- wood cab ). Even down to just 1 headlight instead of 2 . With a different rear cargo body ( metal ) would it work in the North Africa war zone ( Free French ? ) Might pass as a old farm truck used by the Resistance in parts of Europe , or in a Waltons family diorama for those of you old enough to remember the 70s TV show ;D
-

Not in plastic there aren't. Nor are there any armoured cars in plastic.
-
Not sure if you also want a GAZ-AA too?

Yes. Variety is the spice of life! I think it's a particularly good idea when the new model has much in common with an existing one. In my ignorance I imagine it would require less investment on Rubicon's behalf than a completely different kit.
I think the AA was far more numerous than the AAA and deserves a place for that reason. I tend to agree with Pinky on the priority of armoured vehicles over trucks. Nonetheless the simple answer to your question is yes.
-
I think the AA was far more numerous than the AAA and deserves a place for that reason.
There were more than 985,000 GAZ-AA produced during WW2. As for the GAZ-AAA, there were over 37,000 being build until 1943.
I tend to agree with Pinky on the priority of armoured vehicles over trucks.
The GAZ-AAA is a base kit for most Soviet armoured cars... so there is a need to build the truck first!
-
Of course the Germans were heavy users of captured examples as well.
-
If you can manage a Ford variant as well that would be good.
-
If you can manage a Ford variant as well that would be good.
With you here, while I'm trying not to start any completely new armies, (really fighting the urge to do some Soviets) a Ford version would be rather useful in a number of games (Strange Aeons, Pulp Alley etc) & as nice as the pewter Sloppy Jalopy version is, trucks are so much less of a pain in plastic.
-
Might not be able to update the forum until early May as everyone at the studio is busy with preparing displays for Salute.
These two GAZ trucks are going to be shown to the public for the first time at the show...

I see from the Facebook site there is also a T-26 in the works. Is it resin or plastic.

I have to ask, what are the briefcases?
Those are ammo cartridges for the Maxim HMG.

-
That was my first thought (the naming confused me - "utility toolbox").
So you still have to model the belt feed on the quad mount? I could see the channel directing the feed belt.
-
Moving the Quad Maxim onto the GAZ-AAA truck... comes with ammo cartridges and accessories.
Plan to include gunner, loader, and officer with this!

Followed by the Polsten gun prototype is our Quad Maxim M4 gun and the stowage box on the GAZ truck.

Wow.
With exception of the bendy door it looks great.

Very good.

It looks as good as the previous truck kits you've done. Nice detail on the cab especially.

116 of the Maxim quad AA MG, seized at the French Border during the retreat of the Catalogne Army were mounted on seized Chevrolet 1,5 tons trucks ( mostly Cevrolet TA ) , and used as AA trucks to protect the Transport Company units during the Battle of France ... :P
i love the idea of the Quad maxim :P :P

Finally getting around to work on the GAZ-AA/AAA decal sheet. Our plan is to use this set for other Soviet-related vehicles as well... Any comments?

I know very little about Soviet numbering etc (reading various Osprey books makes me think this is true for even the knowledgeable).
One thing I wonder about is how to number multiple vehicles in a similar manner. Maybe a sheet of "Cyrillic" style numbers?
-

It is extremely difficult to create a "Cryllic-style" number sheet by a non-language guy like myself. Even with some Cyrillic phrases, even language speakers had difficulty translating them into English. We can only use photo references and whatever is on the internet to create decal sheets. The one here allows you do multiple vehicles from the same squad. In fact, most GAZ trucks don't have markings at all.

While checking out ebay photos looking for modelling ideas , I came across this , a Maxim Quad mount in a captured British Bedford truck ( Eastern front ? Western front ? ::) ) . So I guess I could mount the captured gun in any number of possible vehicles then ....
(https://s33.postimg.cc/3z6zi3123/Maxim_quad_on_Bedford_truck.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/3z6zi3123/)
So its back to ebay , checking out captured trucks in use by the Germans

A resin box body conversion kit in the making... for those who want more than just a GAZ-AA/AAA truck!
Besides the interior, we have also included a table (not shown) so that you can add maps, tools or radios inside the box body when we release this kit.
