One thing I would like to mention is about the spare wheel on the Kubel. Have a look at the added notes in the assembly instruction section linked here:

Thanks, it makes sense, I seem to recall the DAK version of the Tamiya1/35 kit had a taller mounting, so it’s logical if this does duty for both types it should be trimmed back. Should be easy enough to do. The wheels will look better once the hubs are painted, as will the ones on the Jeep, but I need to be in the right frame of mind before doing detail painting!

Apart from the tow hook (added by its US captors in my imagination!), I added one other item to the base kit, a representation of the fuel tank behind the passenger side dashboard.

It’s just a length of round sprue cut to fit. The US driver came from the Jeep, with an arm from another of the Jeep figures, and some minor modifications to make him fit. He still needs a head!

With your permission, I would like to include your nice picture to my response in the assembly instructions thread so that it may help others.
Can't wait to see the finished models.
But getting back to the spare wheel. I'm also somewhat surprised that Rubicon Models didn't catch this oversight in the beginning. Especially since they showed us test builds (and painted examples) of these before the actual release of the kit. In the Rubicon Models pictures below, you can clearly see how obvious and awkward looking the spare wheel looks.

However, with the DAK wheels, you can see that the fit is so much better. And as you pointed out, some kit manufacturers account for this by having different parts for attaching either the regular or DAK spare wheel.

Again, a bit surprised that Rubicon Models didn't pick up on this little detail.
That being said, even if the spare wheel isn't adjust for looks, it is still a great little kit for miniature gaming.

If anyone has built the CCKW without a winch, what did you use for the front bumper?
Unless I’m even more blind than I think, I cannot find a plain front bumper on the sprues - it’s pictured in one of the insets on the instructions, but all I could find was the deeper version used with the winch. I guess I could trim that down, but it seems a surprising omission given the other options.
Another point to note, for anyone building one, is that the seats in the rear box body were actually the side frames folded down, so if using the seats, you might want to trim the lower four rails from each side moulding. I’m waiting for a second kit to arrive and I’ll do that open, so will demonstrate then.

What is going on with the tires on the CCKW? Is it me or does the tread pattern wrap around the walls of the tire? I just cant wrap my head around it but the tires look really odd to me, it’s probably just some kind of optical illusion.
Can’t wait to see the finished pieces, you got some really nice clean builds going there.

Messy modifications alert, converting an M3 Halftrack in the protected ambulance version. References for the interior seem hard to come by, so this is no more than an impression. Not much will be visible through the door.

Thanks, the treads only go as far as the side wall, the sidewall looks deceptively like the hub in the photos I think.

Yes I think I have used the only one available, the inset images show a straight front bumper which isn’t present, and the notched, heavier variant used with the winch. I shall experiment on the next one I build to see if the notched one can be cut down, failing that I’ll fabricate one from plastic channel.

Thanks, glad it’s not me going mad! As the winch bumper is deeper, it should be possible to trim it to the correct depth, I’ll try on the next one.

A pile of reinforcements arrived today. So I made a start on a second CCKW, this time going for an open back, with the seats down. The kit supplies seats, but the cargo body sides have the seats moulded in the stowed position, so out once again came the chisel blade to remove the unwanted slats

They’ll need cleaned up a bit more, but it’s coming along. Still in two minds about the front bumper, the kit part has some complex fittings on the rear which may make it difficult to cut down, so I’m going to see if I can find some suitably sized plastic channel, or even file some indents into a piece of plastic strip. I should have installed a drivers cab hood hoop before fitting the gun ring, but hindsight is a wonderful thing...

Checking dimensions for the real thing, Evergreen 263 - .100 channel will be only slightly undersized so should look reasonable as a replacement bumper. Using a stock size means I can be consistent on any future builds.
What isn’t immediately obvious from the photos is that I’ve “turned” the ends of the front axle in anticipation of the wheels, I much prefer to avoid the straight ahead position unless I have no choice, I think it adds a little “life” to a model. Nothing more sophisticated than tweaking the stub ends with fine pliers, then reinforcing the opened edge with a sliver of plastic welded into place with solvent - once properly set it should be strong enough.

Evergreen 263 as predicted last night, with the chassis extension from 262 - 2mm channel 3mm long with the end chamfered to fit inside the 28 mm length of 263
I also fitted a hood rail from 0.8mm brass rod, over scale but looks ok to me.

I did try to fit intermediate struts but it needed three hands and luck I don’t possess so in the end I left them off. Passengers or a load will disguise their absence.

I guesstimated the length of the chassis extensions and looking at the photos and comparing them with the real thing they were too long. References confirmed the winch equipped version was 14” longer. 14” in 1/56 scale is a gnats whisker under 6.5mm, so I shortened the extensions to approx 1.5 mm which looks much better and measured at a fraction over 6mm shorter.

Cheers, it’s not precision work, but from “normal viewing distance” looks ok, and at the same time is reasonably robust (although I’m not a gamer (at least not yet), I am reasonably clumsy!)
Didn’t make much progress tonight, added the hooks to the front bumper (scavenged from the kit part), the windshield and the Jeep rear seat I forgot at the weekend. It’s all progress, however minor.

So the two Bedfords are ready for paint, currently drying after a bath in soapy water as the ABS can be a bit slippery (presumably residual mould release agent).
I’ve only made two additions, the quarter light frames (0.5mm square Evergreen strip) and a back for the stowage box under the QLT.

I’ve renamed the thread to reflect the broader D-day/Normandy/Liberation of France nature of the contents, the quote comes from Eisenhower’s order of the day on June 6th, 1944:

Ok be gentle, my first attempt at Mickey Mouse using aerosols, will need tidying up with a brush or Gundam panel line marker. Looks ok I hope. The “British” OD is Halfords Camo Green - the tilt covers are Humbrol 155 ODZ, so you can see the contrast, the Halfords colour being darker

I’m beginning to wonder about repainting the Tilly. I used “Dark Earth” knowing it to be too light for SCC2 Brown,, I’d hoped it would look ok, but I’m starting to think I’ll do a mix per Mike Starmer with 98 Chocolate and 29 Dark earth, in 5:4 proportions, or there are ready mixed colours available, but I don’t know if any of the acrylics are considered a good match. I’ve ordered another QLD to do with the tilt frame exposed, and might paint it SCC2, and repaint the Tilly at the same time. Could do a British Jeep at the same time, make a brown trio. I think the change to SCC15 was authorised a couple of months before D-Day, so I suspect repainting existing second line vehicles would not have been a priority.

A change of pace this evening, two Jeeps, one US Army recon, built straight out of the box; the other British (no marker lamps in grill, no blackout lamp on fender, no rifle rack on windscreen and the rear Jerry can replaced with a WD pattern one - which will look better once painted so the filler disappears).

Lack of updates due to a hasty (and now much regretted) bulk glazing session using Kristal Klear. While it worked well on the Beetle, I tried to get too clever doing the WW2 models, and applied it too thinly, with the result some parts dried much quicker than others, leading to nastily uneven windows, which looked terrible. Unfortunately, while fairly easy to apply, it turns out Kristal Klear is the very devil to remove, so most of the past two days have been spent picking rubbery glazing off models. Not recommended.

I’ve taken the plunge and stripped the paint from the Tilly. No photos as paint stripping is only marginally more exciting than paint drying.

The darker colour is a 1:1 mix of Humbrol 10 and 29 - Service Brown and Dark Earth. The paler colour is Model Air 71.038 Camouflage Medium Brown
I then brushed a thin coat of the 10/29 mix on the front half of the Tilly, I think this will work.

To my eyes this has taken away the reddish tone (compared to the rear body) and brought it back into the “drab” realm. A second thin coat once this is dry should prove it.

I’ve been amusing myself trying to scratchbuild a BARV. The real thing used an M4A2 chassis so that was a fair starting point.

Progress has slowed due to the last day of the school holidays (never easy with an autistic child) but also because I don’t have dimensioned drawings to work from. I’m waiting for the Bradford book of drawings to arrive and in the meantime have been messing about with the interior. I doubt much of this will be visible, but it’s fun to do and I’ll know it’s there. Inspiration came from http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21391 which gave me something to aim for.

The turret inner ring is from a repurposed coke bottle (the ring the cap breaks away from) and where the commanders deck is indented, steps led down to the crawl space to the drivers seat.

A blast of white paint brings it all together, I have some plastruct ladders on order which will do both for inside and hopefully also for the hull rear.

Meanwhile, I’ve been tackling one of the very few disappointing parts of the Rubicon kits, the jerrycans with their solid handles a bit like 1970s Tamiya. Fortunately good quality and reasonably priced replacements are available on eBay- the WD/German style cans are from Garner 3D printing, while the US style cans are from Zona 72 in Spain. No connection with either firm other than as a satisfied customer.

Nice work on the BARV . Never thought I'ld see anyone attempt one in 1/56 . Those look like nice gas cans , I've been using Tamiya 1/48 scale ones . Not the best size wise for the mounts on vehicles , but they look good as cargo and assorted scatter

I ordered some cans online from, I think, Magister Militum, which although advertised as 1/56 were firmly 1/48 when they arrived. They might do at a pinch, but the scale ones are noticeably smaller.
I figure that if modelling stacked cans as a load or scenic feature, I can use the Rubicon ones on the lower levels and save these for where the handles will be visible. On one of the Jeeps I tried scribing handles but it was hard work and not particularly successful.
The BARV is really a bit of fun, I like oddball vehicles and it’s a chance to challenge myself. No doubt as soon as it’s finished someone will market a resin one that would have saved me the effort ;D

Now I have dimensioned drawings I have modified the BARV sides to add width and reduced the angle of the rear panel. The “snot” is sprue melted in liquid cement, which, when dry, gives a solid filler that largely behaves like kit plastic. Patience is key now, to let it all dry thoroughly before cleaning up.

Unfortunately I realised after gluing the suspension that it’s the early type and not right for the M4A2, so it had to come off and will be replaced. I ought to buy a second set of castings to use on an M4A4, as they seem to have been more commonly used for the ARV, but this one is based on the photos of 13/18 Hussars on board an LCT.
The BARV got a witness coat of primer, which showed all the worst lumps and bumps - I’ve since wet sanded it which hopefully will improve things.

I’ve also removed one of the left hand road wheels, to reflect the damage Adeline II suffered on Omaha beach - in the photos the tank is being towed by an M31 (another great potential model for Rubicon to consider!) with the damaged suspension chained up.
