Work In Progress / Re: Codename: Sherman 2016 - M4A1 & M4A4 Sprues 200529

Maybe see if anyone in the Rubicon community has a track set with connecters they don't want , then you can cut them off and super glue them to the early track set . A lot of the connecters are missing  ,so it would save you some work . Notice the turret has a late vision commanders hatch , does it also have a loaders hatch ? Wonder if there are other photos of this tank ? The tricky part will be the fire damaged rubber wheels and track pads , maybe build it pre fire ? The bow MG is gone so maybe set on fire after it got knocked out

The extended track comes as extras in the M4A1(76mm) & M4A3(E8) kits . Only problem is you would have to change the molded in wheel sets as they are the later HVSS type . I don't have any Rubicon Shermans at to check , but their T-34s ( 3 wheel types) matched each other as to placement of track teeth so it was easy to swap them around , hopefully the Shermans are the same

Centre of gravity is going to vary depending on how you build the kit - just add the  plastic pilot / co pilot ,  or add  half a dozen troops  in rear compartment , and then  add weapon pods / door gunners  . There are a few companies making Nam era troops in various  styles ( plastic / resin / metal ) and IRC there are some 80/90s era troops too that could hitch a ride on this whirly bird .What you use is going to effect the sit of the kit on the stand . The best copter stand I've seen was coat hanger wire used as the drop ropes from a chopper to the roof of a building , very realistic .

I would say the plastic is too thick , the panel ( side skirt piece maybe ? ) looks to be less than 1/4 inch in the Stug photo . Either replace the plastic part with a thinner piece  , or sand the visible edge to give the effect of a thin sheet . In  real life the side skirt panels were 5mm thick ( turret mounted were 8mm ) , that's really hard to replicate in scale hence we have over thick pieces

I've never really found a museum walkaround picture set that shows the  full interior of any tank  . Either parts are missing , various bits are cobbled together to make it look complete , or the photographer couldn't access the complete interior ( or he didn't care to shoot the parts I'm interested in  :o ) As the Germans pretty much followed the same  color pattern on the interior of their tanks ( floor - primer , Transmission - blue/green ) you can piece the puzzle  together by checking out various photos of other German tanks .  You might also look for modeler's builds on Missing-Lynx , the guys there are pretty knowledgeable , some of them being well respected authors in the field of WW2 tanks , plus  guys who advise Dragon / Tamiya / etc on their kit research ( not always listen to  ::) ) and guys who design / sell after market resin / PE . If a kit build can make it there without getting "corrected " by the experts , I would say its a good example of how to build / paint any kit

You might want to check a Takom or Meng BergeP paint guide , not all the crew compartment was off white , IRC the floor was primer , transmission , brake assemblies a blue/green . And of course this changed over the course of the war due to paint shortages

It turned out really nice . Sometimes when you kit bash / scratch a kit you have to make a few compromises depending  on your building skills , the contents of your parts box , and if you intend the vehicle , figure , terrain piece to be a major player in your game or just a back ground bit player , ie: a burned out tank as scenery piece ( great use for those old BA resin kits  ;D ) I can't wait to see this kitty painted up and decaled

Early A had the "letter box " MG mount , Late A had the ball mount like the G . The G also had changes to the hull side panels , one piece / angle instead of the 2 piece angle /flat panel over last 2 rear road wheels on the D/A . The pintle mount used   the hull gun  , it would have a better arc of fire mounted up top ( AA) than just hull forward . The large gun was a 20mm , from what I've read very few actually mounted it . And there are 5 or 6 exhaust configurations with various straight ,  curved or the large flame damper pipes as well as various cast or welded armored  covers which appeared at different times from different factories , and with the Germans rebuild program a refurbished early A could have late G parts  ::) gets a little confusing sometimes

Looking good . I take it your using a G hull , why remove the MG mount ?

I would think the crew compartment should be pretty easy to scratch up . Various size boxes/ tubes  for the transmission , radios , and drive lines and brake drums . The crew seats can either be scratched or maybe use spares from the 250/251 add on kits . Adding a driver and a couple of standing guys should fill up that crew space ( IRC crew of 4 ). The tricky part would be the winch drum , pity most model RR shops are gone , there used to be a lot of  scale winches in various sizes for logging layouts in HO and O scale . not a perfect match of course but would look the part

Go to one of the 1/35 scale sites ( Track Links or Armorama ) and look for the Meng or Takom Berge kit reviews / builds . Both companies have a couple of versions with full interiors . Also Saumar museum in France has one , check for walk around photos , IRC it isn't completely restored . And I think Bovington has an early one which they are still working on , there was a WIP video out a while ago .
Are you going to build the full winch assembly or just cover the area with a tarp ? A tarp would also work to cover / hide the driver's compartment  ;D

Looks pretty good . What jumps out to me , as missing from the kit ......

1. jack 2. spare wheel 3. track tool.
While the jack could also be found mounted forward on either fender , and sometimes 2 spare wheels carried at the rear , the track tool was always mounted center on the rear access hatch ( hatch show open ).

Feldwebel  , why don't you ask in forum if somebody has those decals to trade or give away   ? I'm sure someone on here could mail them to you if they didn't need them . A M4A4 isn't on my to buy list at the moment but will be in a couple of months . And as I only model Canadians or Poles I can let you have them if you still need them then
