Excellent choice sir (& yes it does have a pleasingly mental role to play, the book is great fun).

While I don't entirely disagree with either Ripley or Airborne, I think that some applique armour would be a valid & useful addition to a 'library' of Sherman bits. I think it would depend on whether there was to be an actual Sherman upgrade set (akin to the stowage or those coming for the 250/251 & Opel) or alterations/ additions to the existing kits sprues. If it were the latter I'd certainly support the inclusion of crew (commander & possibly gunner whole figures & driver/radio op head & shoulder figures) over a (very) optional bit of extra armour, which would take up too much valuable sprue space, but if an entire upgrade sprue were in the offing I see no reason (working on the size of the stowage sprue) why it shouldn't contain both of those (along with the tracks with the duckbill extenders - hardly essential but a very cool addition & like additional armour more commonly seen in the very late war). Crew kit/rucksacks/.30 cals to attach to the turret & ammunition with the requisite boxes would also be lovely but clearly at the 'gravy' end of the necessity spectrum.
 Of course it would also depend if it were a dedicated Sherman upgrade kit or a generalised allied one but I'd welcome either.

Wish Lists / Applique/extra armour kits for late model Shermans
« on: July 14, 2016, 11:32:07 pm »
As you're currently updating your Sherman, I was wondering if I could put a vote in for some upgraded armour, as by the end of '44 increasing numbers of late model M4's were having various types of extra protection added. what I had in mind was mainly the extra plate welded to the vehicle glacis (rather than  the sandbag or concrete type reinforcement that was also common).
 I'd imagine that it would be an easy addition to any planned upgrade sprue, being simple flat plates - I know that this would be a fairly easy plasticard conversion, but its simplicity would surely also make it easy to add to any planned sprue.

Here's a 1/35 example from Verlinden

Many thanks, choosing how to approach the camo on the softskins was more of a bumache than actually doing them - I realise that you more commonly see images of trucks & field cars with far wispier schemes than what I put on the Opels & Horch - but the few images I'd seen of more heavily sprayed vehicles (maybe they just had more paint to hand at that field depot - or a bit more time to do it) appealed to me more (though I've seen beautifully painted examples of the other approach also - like stevepallfy's).

Cheers, yes they were airbrushed - the Blitz was done freehand & for the hard edged camo I used White-Tak for the masks.

Really enjoyed painting a bunch of Heer transports recently, both WG & Rubicon versions of 251Ds & Blitzs, along with a WG Horch & a 234/2. Given the shared camo schemes, the soft skins with one type, the 251s & 234/2 another, it was possible to get a nice batch painting production line going which made surprisingly light work of it.

Those look fantastic, really looking forward to them - also, as Ripley said, the crew sets, hope to see them on sale soon.

"By the way, too many spots?" - maybe a few but It's hard to say  - once the colours have been muted a little (filters, weathering etc) the effect will be less strident. Certainly most of the images I've found of models tend to have fewer, but pictures of actual period vehicles are ofter not very helpful, being faded, over/under-exposed or damaged in some way - the clear pictres I've found often turn out to be re-enacters atrfully aged (as is probably the case with this one).

Undoubtedly any 'paper panzers' will give the modeller a certain freedom when it comes to paintjob, but as I'm not planning to follow the current trend for the red primer look & the model is intended for gaming, (principally for Secrets Of The Third Reich, possibly for Mopidius's Achtung Cthulhu & WG's Konflict '47 & probably as a piece of scenery in games of WWII set Strange Aeons  or Pulp Alley) I'll go with something similar enough to an actual camo pattern to be familiar - probably something like this;

I've picked up some Panzer Putty, so I hope to make a start at some point next week, so fingers crossed I'll have something other than me drivelling on to post shortly.
 (Incidentally, anyone who fancies elaborate MAN style disc schemes should take a look at Uschi van der Rosten's stencils, which make it considerably easier to achieve uschivdr.com)

Thanks, the paint is Mig Ammo, MIG 901, 902, 903 & 904 - all Dg shades from Dark Base to High Light - you can get them in a set for little under £9 (if you're in the UK I've had excellent service from SandM stuff - careful how you Google that one). There's also a hard line highlight on some parts, also Mig, MIG 012 Dunkelgelb aus 44 DG III.
 I'm thinking of doing a late hard edged three colour camo of the Daimler - Benz factory type so I'm looking for something to make the masks with. I've used tape & white-tak in the past but never been entirely happy with either, so I plan to get hold of some Panzer Putty or the PK Pro equivalent, so if anyone's had any experience with the stuff I'd love to know what you think of it.
