Neat idea for the VW model.

Just to point out, on the left side of the pic just popping into frame is a VW bus (another classic VW). It is near the light-blue CCKW.

If you guys redesign T-34 family to the level of your latest kits some time in the future, it would be great!

To be completely honest, I am completely happy with the current line of T-34 kits Rubicon Models produces - I have several of them. These kits are still some of the best model kits out there, and look fantastic on the gaming table when assembled and painted. More importantly, they go together very easily (and quickly). Especially when comparing the T-34 kits to something newer kits like the Panzer IV. Yes, the Rubicon Models' Panzer IV kits are fantastic, but I still think the T-34 kits are still fantastic too.

I'm just saying; from a very long time miniature wargamer's point of view more than an ex-die hard modeller's point of view.

I have to agree with ripley here. Even if Rubicon Models released a Matilda , Cromwell , and Churchill kit, I don't see myself picking up any, or maybe only one. Yes, even though I question the choice what Italeri/Warlord did with the Matilda's track sets, it's still a pretty good kit.

Would it be great to see all the main WW2 tanks and vesicles produced by Rubicon models?
Certainly yes! Very much so, but many gamers (and modellers) would be much more interested in seeing Rubicon Models produce something that is not already available. Oh, I don't know. Maybe something like an M3 Medium tanks (Lee/Grant) for example.  ;)

To date, no one out there produces a good (or even a bad) plastic model kit of the M3 Medium in 1:56 scale.

Have you considered including the German cupola installed on captured vehicles, it's only a small part.

Compared to the standard French cupola, how much different was the German WW2 cupola?

Showcase & Gallery / Re: Tiger I - first attempt at zimmerit
« on: June 15, 2021, 09:15:56 am »
When I first saw the pictures, something just didn't look right, but I could not put my finger on it. Then I read ripley's comment and it all came together. Or should I say, how it all comes apart.  ;)

As for the zimmerit, great job!

Sometime ago Rubicon Models asked us for our opinion about zimmerit. I was outright against the zimmerit being already added to the parts. It just looks better and more natural if done by hand. Also, if someone didn't want zimmerit, well, they are stuck with it (pun intended).

A friend once commented, "Adding zimmerit to a model is easy. It's making the 1:72 scale tools used to apply the zimmerit is the hard part." - he's a big fan of 1:72 for miniature gaming, and the 1:72 scale tools was just him being amusing.

First, (@SheriffSherman) your work on the muzzle end looks great. I wouldn't change a thing.

I mostly made the reference to the other thread for the new members. Several people have added some good info and suggestions (including you SheriffSherman). Now that Rubicon Models offers so many versions of the M4 Medium, I just had to shamelessly point out that older thread.  ;)

As for the collar ring, well, originally I was going include the cover (ring + thread protector), but later changed my mind after doing some research. I noticed that in some WW2 photos they didn't use the thread cover, and you could clearly see the threads (and collar ring). So I said, "I'll do that instead, but without cutting the fine threads" because I build my models for gaming and not for contests. Yes, I still try to make my models look okay, but I tend to skip things like adding very fine threads.

Okay, back to the collar ring. I started out by making a ring from the end of a piece of plastic pipe. First I did some careful shaping before cutting the tip of the pipe to make the ring. After slipping it onto the barrel, I used a little Tamiya extra thin to tack it into place. I don't recall if I had to do any smoothing afterwards.

Side Note:

My first M4 Medium was the Italeri/Warlord plastic model kit:

But this was the very first Rubicon Models M4 Medium I assembled and painted:

General Discussions / Re: Painting German vehicles
« on: June 11, 2021, 12:33:58 pm »
Even though I spent a lot of time on this topic, I'm no expert, but I will share with you what little I know.

Canvas covers for trucks and stuff, as well as for horse drawn wagons, where in dark gray and dark brown. Of course, there are exceptions to this, and canvas covers of light brown or tan is also possible, as well as greenish tan/gray (Vallejo: German camouflage beige). Also it depends on the year and theater of operations. Overall, I (mostly) tend to paint the canvas covers on my German vehicles with colors that look good (usually showing some contrast) - this my or may not always be 100% accurate, but who's to say. Besides, it all depends. And yes, there were some regulations, but there are many examples of variations and exceptions to the rule.

Short answer is just paint the canvas tops to your liking. Within limits of course. Also, I have seen wartime photos of camouflaged canvas tops, but more often canvas tops seem to be of one color than camouflaged. Also note that some color profiles would lead you to believe that canvas tops can be black, but this is just dark gray.

Have you seen the M4 Medium Tank thread?  (For the new members) ;)

Yes, it's an old thread, but still a goodie.

Wish Lists / Re: Early model StuG III
« on: June 07, 2021, 01:27:03 pm »
I assumed somebody would have asked for this before, but having scrolled back I don't see it. Isn't it rather an obvious gap in the range? Nobody else does one in plastic, and it's great for a whole variety of early to mid-war scenarios, right up to D and E variants in Stalingrad. I don't know enough about the development of the basic hull but couldn't it be done as a conversion pack to the existing StuG ?
EC

You are not alone. I have also noted this in a post I did sometime ago.
You can see it here:

Important Note: The wheels look very similar, but the front wheels and the rear wheels are not the same (fine details, center hub). Parts A11 and A20 are the front wheels, as per the instructions. These could easily get mixed up after cutting them from the sprue.

58
That does look more the part (pun intended).
With your permission, I would like to include your nice picture to my response in the assembly instructions thread so that it may help others.

Can't wait to see the finished models.

But getting back to the spare wheel. I'm also somewhat surprised that Rubicon Models didn't catch this oversight in the beginning. Especially since they showed us test builds (and painted examples) of these before the actual release of the kit. In the Rubicon Models pictures below, you can clearly see how obvious and awkward looking the spare wheel looks.

However, with the DAK wheels, you can see that the fit is so much better. And as you pointed out, some kit manufacturers account for this by having different parts for attaching either the regular or DAK spare wheel.

Again, a bit surprised that Rubicon Models didn't pick up on this little detail.
That being said, even if the spare wheel isn't adjust for looks, it is still a great little kit for miniature gaming.

06/24, looking good. I have even notice the front wheels  ;)

One thing I would like to mention is about the spare wheel on the Kubel. Have a look at the added notes in the assembly instruction section linked here:

Work In Progress / Re: Panzer II Plastic TS1 Primed 200810

With the all Covid-19 stuff going on, things seem to have come to a stand still. Including the SdKfZ.10 and Panzer II projects.
Makes sense really since this has also happened to most gaming around the world as well.
