Title: Hey , have you seen this book ?
Post by: ripley on February 23, 2018, 10:57:56 am
I love Military In Detail  books . I love Osprey / Vanguard , I love Squadron Signal , and all the other easy to find , every modeller in North America and Western Europe  has them on his book shelf , kind of book . But there are some out there that not everybody knows about . So lets share those interesting books dealing with WW2 model subjects . For example : there is a line of books about Canadian use of tanks and armored cars / artillery from Service Publications , Ottawa , Ontario , Canada . They have books on the Ram , Sherman, 17-Pounder , as well as newer tanks like the Leopard in Canadian Service  ( I think about 25 published so far ). Most are small soft cover books , with a picture on each page , I have The Churchill book , 24 pages , and that cost me $11 . IRC they were going to publish , or have published a hard cover book on the Ram tank . Any way this just an example of a local ( Canadian ) book series that you guys might not know about . I'm sure some of you have publications like that where you are from . Please share them if you will . Always on the look out for more books .  ;D That being said I just received today 3 more books from Wings & Wheels Publications ( Czech Republic )  The one I want to hi light today is Soviet WWII Anti - Tank Guns .

The perfect book to use in detailing your 28mm PSC 45mm AT guns or their 76mm Model 43  . As well it covers the 57mm ZIS -2 and every bodies favorite the 76mm ZIS-3 . Lots of detail pictures of every part of the gun and trail you could ever hope for . 60 pages , with up to 5 close up pictures per page as well as large full page photos . This little beauty cost me about $ 17 on sale .  W&W P have a variety of books on WW2 Artillery , Tanks and Soft Skin Vehicles as well as Modern gear ( the DANA SPG ! ) and Wingy Things ,  Wish I knew about this company before I built my PSC gun kit , oh well I still have 2 more to build

Thanks, useful to know.

In the UK there are only a few specialist shops (Ian Allan in Birmingham and London being my most regular haunts - a couple of times a year) which allows the browsing of books and quite often at shows the books  are shrink-wrapped. It is great to get recommendations on ranges.

Oh, and the Birmingham shop stocks some Rubicon models (as does Wayland's Forge in the Custard Factory).

One book to be wary of is Osprey's hardback "British Battle Tanks", supposedly by David Fletcher.  It looks good - Fletcher is an entertaining writer, and a whole book by him on British Armour seems very attractive.  But it's actually just a compendium of existing Vanguard titles on British tanks.  There may be some original content, or I just don't have the books that is taken from.  So, unless you don't have the Vanguard books, this is one to avoid.

For those of you in the UK, The Works is now selling the Haynes T34 book for £6.

I have one, only glanced through it so far, highlight is a photograph purporting to be a T34 in service in Yemen last year. Written by Mark Healy.

This makes Tiger, Sherman, Panzer IV and T34 for WW2 tanks having been on offer.

Ah, you might be right.

Unfortunately I did not get it or the Sherman one while they were on offer at Christmas.

So far there have been a few typos in the text.

Just reviewed on the Armorama site ( Armor / AFV forum ) . This looks like a must have book since we have the Rubicon kit coming  later this year ( I hope )

Cool.

Is it in the traditional hardback or a softback like the RMS Titanic one?

In the text of the T34 one the author mentions he is writing one on the Stug.

The reviewer said it was hard cover , IRC none of the WW2 tank books have been released in soft , at least no one I know has got or seen one . And yes a Stug book is forth coming . Hope he touches on the Stug IV as well ( Stug III fighting compartment slapped on a Panzer IV hull ),

Picked up my Haynes Flak 88 book , wow . its great . Chapters on ammo , tow vehicles , how to place the gun , load the gun , etc , etc . Another winner by Haynes  . In relation to the discussions on the early Panzer IV A - Ds , I thought I would mention some great books that I've had a chance to look at , they're by Craig Ellis ( Eight Wheels Good Publishing ) . Hes got 11 books out on the Panzer IV , all with pictures from his personal collection . Such titles as Volume 1 : A - C , Vol 2 : D - E /TauchPz / VorPz ,  Suppliment Issue 2 Barbarossa Stowage ( unit specific stowage 1941 Russia ) , he's also authoured a couple of books for Peko Publishing  Panzer IV in Action Vol 1 & 2 . Again all his own pictures . I do have  a couple of Peko books ( on Russian subjects ) but can reccmend any of the ( 16 ) books they now have in the series . Both series give you a full page picture of a vehicle with a detailed description of the identifying  features as well as observations on markings , stowage and crews , battle damage , etc  . Occasionally you get 3 or 4 pictures of the same vehicle from different angles or taken days  apart , Both series are about 90 - 100 pages and IMO well worth the $ 45 - 50 US price tag . Any other good books out there on the Panzer IV that we might not know about  ? Hmm , tried adding images of the books but the picture program seems to have changed and dosen't work for me at this time , I'll call my son , he'll know how it works  :-[

Haynes to release a book on the Panther late May 2019 . Same author as their excellent ( IMO ) T-34 series  publication

As well , PEKO has a book  #19 in their WW2 Photo Book Series , this one deals with German SPGs ( Hummel , Bison , Grille , Sturm Tiger etc ) . Same format as the others , 112  pages with one picture per page , lots of info on units , markings , crew , stowage , etc ( Hungarian / English text )
