Well, it's meant to be this...

But in reality it's hand painted, so it's just a few little illegible dots and squiggles :)

Thanks gents :)

On a reality note ,  having a MP ammo pouch on your belt in such a small vehicle would be really dumb as you would snag on all sorts of stuff getting in and out  , never mind having the grenade screen closed . A lot of crews didn't even wear their pistol holsters

Fair point.
Maybe he's an infantry officer who has just hitched a ride then ;)

Showcase & Gallery / Rubicon Models SdKfz 223 - finished
« on: July 04, 2019, 09:09:47 pm »
And finally, here's the finished 223 A/C for my DAK forces...

Thanks for advice and suggestions regarding the turret-mounted MG34 (unable to swivel past the forward frame antennae uprights - and yet you have to mount the turret assembly sideways, meaning you can never swivel the MG to the front, unless you want to risk bending or breaking it).
In the end I just went for swapping in a spare Perry MG34 once everything else was painted and the turret mounted in position... It's actually a slightly better looking and more robust piece than the original MG34 supplied with the kit, so all's well that ends well.

And in possibly over-revealing close up, bearing in mind that in real life the actual model is all of 3 inches long...  :)

The commander is the Rubicon body provided, but kit-bashed with a Perry head, arms and accoutrements.
While I love Rubicon's kits, I'm afraid I can't say I love the crew figures. The detail is just too soft and indistinct, and too many of the details, especially the shapes of caps, helmets etc, just look wrong to me. So this is a compromise involving a bit of scalpel-work. I think he's turned out well though...

Almost believable as an adventurous hero of the Reich from an old propaganda reel... ;)

That’s a handsome beast. Very nice job.
Need to crack on with my Ausf.E

Thanks Tracks.
I think the spare MG34 barrel might be the simplest solution. I have plenty of them on the frame on my Perry DAK boxes, so if the barrel goes when bending, I’ll just have to replace.

The magnet solution sounds a bit more technical and fiddly than I really have the appetite to undertake  :)
But thanks again for the creative ideas.

Thanks EWG.
I had considered the first option, but not the second. But actually it might be a better solution. The MG34 barrel does not seem that bendy to me I must admit. It overshoots the antennae frame upright by a good 3-4mm. That’s going to require rather a lot of bend!

Hmm. Okay, thank you for the info. I shall try to bend the barrel and hope it doesn’t snap. I guess I can touch up the paintwork afterwards. Had I fitted the open anti grenade mesh hatches, I could have removed the MG34, painted it separately and then added to the otherwise finished model. Unfortunately, I chose the closed hatches - so the MG and its mounting are sealed in, and so bending the barrel will be the only option in order to fit the complete turret assembly to the vehicle once everything is painted.
Maybe an errata on the next print run of the assembly instructions?  :)

Apologies for the threadomancy, but I have today finally got round to building my SdKfz 222/223. As it's for my DAK force (and I already have a Blitzkrieg 222) I decided to make the 223, with deployed radio array antennae.
However, I've encountered a problem, and wonder if anyone else has come across it. Or has any bright ideas.

In summary, once you have attached the deployed radio antenne, when you then insert the rotating turret assembly (which has to be offered up to the body of the vehicle with the MG34 facing 90 degrees from front, owing to the position of the lugs and corresponding recesses in the upper hull plate), it is then impossible to rotate the turret assembly back to face front - because the machine gun barrel cannot get past either of the two forward uprights of the deployed radio antennae...

Did I do something wrong? Am I being dim or missing something? Or is it a design flaw?

Like many people I suspect, I prefer to paint my models in as close to an intact state as possible (i.e. I didn't want to paint the rest of the vehicle, THEN add the radio antennae afterwards).
But I do need to be able to remove the turret assembly for painting as a separate unit, so that when dry, it will still rotate (which wouldn't be the case if I painted it in situ...).
In which case this seems a fiendish conundrum!

Thanks Ripley. Alas, I didn’t forget - I did look at lots of pictures before I started painting and clocked the black tyres. Unfortunately it would have been pretty well impossible to get the paintbrush in there onto the tiny and fairly inaccessible little bits of the tyres showing - except for the spare on the back, and it made no sense to paint that, when I couldn’t do the in situ wheels. Luckily no one I ever play wargames with is enough of an AFV aficionado to know (or care) that this particular AFV didn’t have solid steel wheels  :)

The advantage of being a wargamer rather than a scale modeller  ;)

Rubicon Models resin WW2 Renault R35 light tank.

Another very beautiful and crisp little model. So much detail on it that I couldn't bring myself to add any stowage which would obscure it!

Excellent. Such a brilliant looking little vehicle. I had the Tamiya one about 40 years ago  ;D

I’d love to add one to my DAK collection, but am hard pressed to imagine why you’d need an amphibious car in the desert...  :(
