Heer46: Kharkov 1943 - The Last Victory in the East

The good guys at Heer46 had send us their new releases from their crowdfunding project (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/kharkov-1943#/story).
Excellent sculpt and much better proportion in scale and attention to details than most manufacturers.

Enjoy!

Work In Progress / M10/M36 Tank Destroyer - Project CLOSED!
« on: June 03, 2015, 11:08:15 pm »
M10/M36 Tank Destroyer

Once again, a US vehicle... a quick quote from Wikipedia...

Background History of the M10 / M36 Tank Destroyer

The M10 Tank Destroyer (christened the "Wolverine" by the British) was a WW2 US tank destroyer based on the chassis of the M4 Sherman tank fitted with the 3-inch (76.2 mm) M7 Gun.  It was numerically the most important US tank destroyer of WW2 and combined a reasonably potent anti-tank weapon with a turreted platform.  Despite the introduction of more-powerful types as replacements, it remained in service until the end of the war.  A total of 6,706 were built between 1942 & 1943.

The British converted some M10s to use their successful 17-pounder (76 mm) anti-tank gun, which they designated as "17pdr SP Achilles".  The turret needed modification to take the longer gun.  The 17-pounder was of a similar bore, but longer and using a larger propellant charge had far superior armor penetration capability.  It was used by the British, Canadian, and Polish armies in Italy and northwest Europe.  About 1,110 were built.

The M36 Tank Destroyer (nickname "Jackson") was essentially an up-gunned M10 tank destroyer, replacing the former's 3 inch (76.2mm) M7 Gun with a powerful 90mm gun.

The M36 first served in combat in Europe in September 1944, where it proved to be a match for any of the tanks being fielded by the Germans.  About 1,400 M36s were produced during the war.  The need for 90 mm gunned tank destroyers was so urgent that, during October to December 1944, 187 conversions of standard M4A3 hulls were produced; these vehicles, designated M36B1, were rushed to the European Theater of Operations and used in combat alongside standard M36s.

The M36 also saw use in the Korean War, able to defeat any of the Soviet tanks used in that conflict.  Some were supplied to the Koreans as part of the Military Assistance Program and served for years, as did re-engined examples found in Yugoslavia, which operated into the 1990s.  Two remained in service with the Republic of China Army at least to 2001.

Objective of our 1/56 plastic kit will be as follow:

- a 3 sprue plastic kit to build either a M10 / M36 or a 17pdr SP Achilles
- a common M4A3 chassis with two transmission cover options
- three interchangeable turrets – M10 / 17pdr SP / M36
- simplified interior for all turrets (gun details, ammo rack, etc)
- minor detail changes for different variants (head lights, gun travel lock, etc)
- the M36 turret can be used with our M4A3 kit (280012) to become a M36B1

A Quick Update – Jun 2, 2015

Here is another quick update on what we are doing:

German Stowage Kit #1 – We have just signed the release of the mould for commercial production.  The kit will be available for late June release.

Various German Waterslide Decals – We will be releasing a total of 7 waterslide decals for our German gamers.  These decals will cover all Panzer Divisions (3 sets), all Heavy Panzer Battalions (2 sets), all SS Panzer Divisions (1 set), and all divisions for the African Campaign (1 set).  The decal sets will be available for late June release.

M5A1 Stuart (Early & Late Production) / M5A1 Reece – This is a 2 sprue kit that will enable you to either build a M5A1 as an early or late production light tank or a M5A1 recon vehicle.  Mould is done and is now under testing and adjustment.  The kit will be available for late June release.

M8 Scott / M5A1 Stuart (Late Production) – This is also a 2 sprue kit which will enable you to build either a M8 Scott howitzer or a M5A1 Stuart (late production) light tank.  Mould is done and is now under testing and adjustment.  The kit will be available for late June release.

A15 Crusader I / II / III / AA – The most important British tank of the North African Campaign, this is a 3 sprue kit which will enable you to build SIX variants of the A15 Crusader; this include the Mk I / I CS / II / II CS / III / AA.  The “CS” stands for “Close Support” which mounted a 3 inch howitzer in the turret instead of the 2-pounder.  Mould is almost done, and should be available for testing soon!  Hopefully will make it for July release…

M3 / M3A1 Half Track – This will be a 2 sprue kit (with a separate one piece truck body) which enables you to build either a M3 or M3A1 Half Track vehicle.  Because of the limited space on the two sprues, we are not able to include the various canvas tops to this kit.  We have included other options, such as machine guns, rear racks, and containers instead.  This kit should be able for Q3/15 (Sept) release.

M3 Half Track Expansion Kit #1 – This expansion kit will include the M21 MMC and the various canvas tops for the M3/M3A1 Half Track kit.  Also included is a standalone M1 81mm mortar and portable radio.  This kit should be able for Q3/15 (Sept) release.

Opel Blitz – We probably will rename this kit to “SdKfz 305 3-ton 4x2 Cargo Truck” because of IP related concerns.  It will still be an Opel Blitz!  This will be a 2 sprue kit (with a separate engine & driver compartment) which enables you to build an Opel Blitz 3-ton cargo truck.  Also included is a canvas top with closed or open rear tarpaulin cover, and optional seats and fuel cans.  This kit should also be able for Q3/15 (Sept) release.

M8 Greyhound / M20 Armoured Utility Car – Hopefully this can be a 2 sprue kit.  You should be able to build either a M8 Greyhound or a M20 Armoured Utility Car.  With careful planning, you should be able to swap the vehicle tops to make them interchangeable if you wanted.  Final drawings are now approved, and queuing up for mould making.  Should see final product for Q3/15 (Sept) release.

Rumours – Rumours had it we are working on yet another US armoured vehicle, this time British gamers will be able to use it as well.  Work had also begun on a new German tank too!  We are also reviewing the possibility of adding two more expansion kits to the SdKfz 251/1 Ausf D family; hopefully this will add at least SIX more variants to your collection!

That’s it for now!  In the meantime, please enjoy our released kits!  Buy more to keep us working!

M8 Greyhound / M20 Armoured Utility Car

Once again, a US vehicle... a quick quote from Wikipedia...

The M8 light armored car, the "Greyhound", entered combat service with the Allies in 1943. It was purpose designed to serve as the primary basic command and communication combat vehicle of the US Cavalry Reconnaissance Troops.  The M8 first saw action in Italy in 1943 and was used by the US Army both in Europe and in the Far East. In the latter theater, it was used mostly on Okinawa and the Philippines, and was occasionally employed in its original tank destroyer role as most of the Japanese armor was vulnerable to its 37 mm gun.  Between March 1943 and June 1945, a total of 8,523 units were built.

The M20 armored utility car, also known as the M20 scout car, was a Greyhound with the turret replaced with a low, armored open-topped superstructure and an anti-aircraft ring mount for a .50-in M2 heavy machine gun. A bazooka was provided for the crew to compensate for its lack of anti-armor weaponry. The M20 was primarily used as a command vehicle and for forward reconnaissance, but many vehicles also served as armored personnel carriers and cargo carriers. It offered high speed and excellent mobility, along with a degree of protection against small arms fire and shrapnel. When employed in the command and control role, the M20 was fitted with additional radio equipment. A total of 3,680 M20s were built by Ford during its two years in production (1943–1944).

Objective of our 1/56 plastic kit will be as follow:

- a 2 sprue plastic kit to built either a M8 or M20 armoured car
- two MG arrangements for the M8 - rear mount or ring mount
- open front driver hatch
- external utility toolbox or land mine rack
- simplified interior

Work In Progress / Proposed Project: SdKfz 250 Alte or Neu ??
« on: May 06, 2015, 10:13:35 pm »

Background History

The SdKfz 250 (German: Sonderkraftfahrzeug 250; 'special motor vehicle') was a light armoured halftrack, very similar in appearance to the larger Hanomag-designed SdKfz 251, and built by the DEMAG firm, for use by Nazi Germany in World War II. Most variants were open-topped and had a single access door in the rear.

The SdKfz 250 was adopted in 1939 to supplement the standard halftrack. Production delays meant that the first 250 did not appear until mid-1941.

The vehicle was used in a wide variety of roles throughout World War II. The basic troop carrier version was used as an armored personnel carrier for reconnaissance units, carrying scout sections. This basic variant usually mounted one or two MG34 machine guns. Later variants carried 20mm, 37mm, and even 75mm guns to support the more lightly armed versions.

Several special-purpose variants were seen early in the war. The 250/3 and 250/5 were command variants, with fewer seats but equipped with long-range radio equipment. These were used by battalion and higher commanders as personal command vehicles, most famously the 250/3 used by Erwin Rommel in the North African campaign. Early versions had large 'bedframe' antennas, which were easy to spot at long range, making them more vulnerable to artillery fire. Later variants dispensed with this and used a whip antenna instead.

The SdKfz 253 variant was fully enclosed, and was used by artillery forward observers to accompany tank and mechanized infantry units.

The initial design had an armoured body made of multi-faceted plates, which gave good protection against small arms fire, but which made the design both expensive to manufacture and quite cramped. Production of this early version stopped in October 1943 with some 4,200 built, and a second version (neue Art or "new version"), greatly simplified to speed up manufacture, began replacing it

In both variants, the armour was useful only for stopping small-arms fire and small artillery fragments. Heavy machine gun fire, anti-tank gun fire, or almost any tank gun could penetrate the SdKfz 250 at long range.

Which version you think we should do... can't do both!
Mind you this is not a "do it right away" project, just on our production plan...

The Opel Blitz series of 3-ton trucks proved the true backbone of German military strength in World War 2.  Production began in 1937 and proceeded into 1944 to which some 70,000 2x4 Opel Blitz trucks were delivered out of German factories.

Our Opel Blitz project is a well-kept secret especially for Salute 2015.  Features include:
- A 2 sprue plastic kit
- Single piece truck cabinet for ease of assembly
- Truck side boards can be assembled in open or closed position

Wish Lists / M4A3 Revisited
« on: April 19, 2015, 07:58:47 pm »
We are looking at our current M4A3 Sherman, and is reviewing the possibility (somehow) to value-add extra variants to it... plus fixing some of the issues on the existing sprue!

There are several possibilities:
- M4A3E2 Jumbo
- M36B1

What else is there?

Please note, this is not a definitely project, just some brainwashing!
