Showcase & Gallery / Re: Rubicon Models SdKfz 223 - finished
« on: July 05, 2019, 12:03:16 pm »
Great model, Captain.  I think the scuffing and scratching is just right - it's usually overdone, or applied like an oil painting.

The commander looks very good.  I don't much like Rubicon figures, for the reasons you and Tracks mention.  There's a reason that 28mm figures are usually sculpted slightly out of scale.  Same with the weapons.  And I'm sure it was necessary to wear ammo pouches sometimes, especially on a recon mission.

Really pleased to see this.  I will definitely be getting a couple!

It may take time before it becomes an 'accepted' military modeling scale.  It's quite close to 1/48 scale, which had the advantage of being an established aircraft modeling scale.  I wonder how many military modelers who aren't wargamers will make the jump to a slightly smaller scale.

Work In Progress / Re: King Tiger - More 3D Drawings 190621

We know some people are concerned about our new King Tiger kit being too complicated to assemble with too many smaller parts.  Rest assured we understand your worries, this is why we spend time to create this single piece lower hull base-plate fitted with extra fine details to simplify assembly of the interior.  We care!

That's exactly what I'm talking about!  I think that is the right approach with this scale - especially if you don't want to scare off the wargamers.  That is more than enough detail when viewed through the hatches.

Those internal details look great.  I hope they will be cast in relatively few pieces; I would be able to just drop the main parts into place and not fiddle around too much with little bits.

I guess a 'special' kit like this was always going to be a German subject.  It would have been great if it had been a bit more left-field, like a Centurion.  That said, it's a very solid choice of subject, and the Tiger II's interior is perhaps more impressive in its own right than some other vehicles (those racks of massive shells look very cool).  I can just see Ripley building it as a wreck...

Offering 2 versions is a pretty good idea.  Or selling the interior as an add-on.

Still waiting for the two, six and twenty five spounders...

But maybe that is just me...

^___^

It's not just you.  And there's also the 17 pounder.  The 37mm is probably the least useful of the Allied anti-tank guns.  The 2-pdr and 6-pdr/57mm were far more important, without taking into account the Soviet anti-tank weapons (which were as important as their tanks).  But it's a start, and has the benefit of Rubicon's experience with all the German artillery.

The Schwimmwagon did serve in Africa. It's quite possible the quartermaster filled out the required paperwork (in triplicate) for more VWs to use for scouting purposes, and both Kubelwagons and Schwimmwagons arrived.

Are you saying they did, or they could have?  I've never seen any evidence of it.

These Panzer IVs look like winners.

I really like the artwork for the Panzer IVs.  Very nice indeed.  Apart from the human figures, which always look awkward.

Blood - why should people who question release decisions not be able to say so?  Rubicon have made this forum available and don't censor the debate.  They've also (sometimes) benefitted from criticism of their decisions.  If you're happy with everything then that's great - continue to tell them so.  Noone will think you're a 'fanboi' or anything like that.  There is another member here who likes to snipe at people who post about technical and historical issues - why?   If it all ultimately results in better kits and, sometimes, redirects a questionable decision, then it's all good.

The Beetle looks very nice!

I understand that this was a "filler" project to complete a multi-slide mould (which contains several projects), but if it doesn't sell well, will this discourage this practice in the future?

I think a more useful German 'filler' project would have been a staff car.  It could have been done with the same number of parts.

This would be one of the first Panzer IVs I attempt.  There are some nice touches on this - another defining feature of DAK Panzers is that they tended to be festooned with spare tracks.

With only two or three compaines making 1:56 scale plastic kits, after reading this someone might wonder why don't these two to three companies want to work together instead of against each other? Because it seems like a waste of resources when we get almost the same plastic kit from two or three different companies.

My sense is that Warlord have deliberately undercut Rubicon in several cases.  I can't prove it, but their releases have tended to track Rubicon's (Rubicon appear to have a longer lead time from announcement to release).  I bet Warlord see Rubicon as pretenders in a market they'd pretty much created (plastic 1/56 scale vehicles).

A are a few examples:
8.8cm Flak Gun (RM & Italeri) - both more than good enough for the gaming table. (1)
Jadgpanzer 38(t) (RM & Italeri) - both more than good enough for the gaming table. (2)
Panther Tank (RM & Italeri) - both more than good enough for the gaming table.
M8/M20 Armored Car - both more than good enough for the gaming table.
Tiger I (RM & Italeri) - both more than good enough for the gaming table. (3)
Stug III (RM & Italeri) - both more than good enough for the gaming table. (4)
M10 TD (RM & Italeri) - both more than good enough for the gaming table. (5)
M3 Halfrack (RM & Warlord*) - both more than good enough for the gaming table.
SdKfz 251 Halfrack (RM & Warlord*) - both more than good enough for the gaming table.
Opel Blitz/Maultier (RM & Warlord*) - both more than good enough for the gaming table. (6)
* There is another company that makes plastic kits for Warlord Games, but I'm not 100% sure who it is. Plastic Soldier Company?

I would caveat some of those comments.  You're correct about them all being servicable wargaming models, but there are still significant differences in quality and detail.

Warlord/Italeri's 88 doesn't include plastic crew, and they didn't do the tractor in plastic.
I think Warlord's Panther is noticeably better, provided you like Zimmerit.  However, the tracks are a bit annoying.
Rubicon's M8/M20 is, I think, more crisply detailed and with complete wheels.
Warlord/Italeri's late Tiger I is better than Rubicon's, but Rubicon's kit makes a nice early Tiger (with a bit of work).
Rubicon's StuG III is, unfortunately, rather inaccurate.  Warlord/Italeri's is greatly superior - apart from the tracks and the limited options.
I thought the detail on Warlord/Italeri's M10 was rather soft, and the crew were pretty horrible.  While Rubcon's M10/M36 has a few issues, I think it's much better (and you get the M36, which is rather good from a wargaming perspective).
I think Rubicon's SdKfz 251 and M3 halftracks are vastly superior to Warlord's.
I don't have the Warlord Opel kit - it looks like better value in terms of options, which is unusual.
There are also the Sherman kits, which partly overlap (Rubicon hasn't yet done an M4A4 and Warlord only has that and the M4).  Here, I think the Rubicon kits are also vastly superior, not just in terms of detail and ease of assembly, but also the range of options.  This is where competition has helped us, because Rubicon have looked at what Warlord did and improved upon it.

PSC appears to be supplying designs for some kits - you can tell from the scaled-up figures (identical to PSC's), component layout and oversize details.

Fantastic to see this project nearing completion.  I think this is the one I've really been looking forward to.  I can see some very interesting components on those sprues, including quite a lot of stowage.  Features like the smoke dischargers also seem greatly improved since earlier kits.

I assume it's one of the missing details you're referring to, but the trackguards are missing the dreaded non-slip pattern...
