Title: British QF 17/25-pdr gun - Plastic Test Assembly 201202
Post by: Rubicon Models on March 02, 2020, 10:28:42 pm
As everyone had guessed, how could our Morris C8 tractor without the QF 25-pdr gun? The iconic duo is now on our active project list and is currently under 3D prototyping... will post the prototypes soon!

The Ordnance QF 25-pounder, or more simply 25-pounder or 25-pdr, was the major British field gun and howitzer during WW2. It was introduced into service just before the war started, combining high-angle and direct-fire, relatively high rates of fire, and a reasonably lethal shell in a highly mobile piece. It remained the British Army's primary artillery field piece well into the 1960s, with smaller numbers serving in training units until the 1980s.

Our kit will offer the choice of building an Mk I or Mk III gun with limber included. A British artillery crew is planned as well.

Very nice! Always a pleasure to see more artillery models in plastic  ;D

Will it have 17pdr pheasant option?

Well it's very nice to see this on the horizon.  From a wargaming perspective a 2-pdr would be far more useful, but hopefully that's not too far off.

Please include lots of ammo boxes, as they found their way onto many British tanks.

I'm going to have to respectfully, but strongly disagree with you there. You'll see a dozen 25 pdrs on the table before you'll ever see a 2 pdr.  The 2 pdr is really only useful to strictly historical players, and those are a dieing breed in the 28mm world. From a sales perspective it's a no brainer.  Do indirect fire weapons (or primarily indirect in the case of the 25 pdr) belong on the wargaming table? no not really, but that's the way it should be and not the way it is.  I'd also say releasing a 6 pdr before a 2 pdr would make more economic sense.

I wouldn't expect to sell many of these if it comes without crew, or crew figures are unavailable at the time of release. They don't need to be plastic or multipose, but it should have crew.  Not every prospective buyer will be aware of the available Perry crew, or interested in using them.

I am going to have to agree with both of you.

The 25 pounder is iconic in the desert, Bolt Action have rules for their use in the direct fire role (and they seemed to turn up at every armed services club in Australia).

The 2 pounder is iconic for early war, it's effectiveness may not be up to much, but you have little option for any  direct fire weapons.

They do need a crew, and I do want Perry compatible crew for my 25 pounder.

I'm looking forward to this gun . Lots of diorama potential , both in transport mode with the FAT and in a firing position . In the 1st post Rubicon says a crew is planned , but in the 1st CAD  it says crew included ?? Hmm , maybe 2 crews , a plastic  late war with the gun kit and a pewter / resin crew in early or desert uniforms ?

Of course I encourage this model kit. After all it will be a good match for their other kit that tows it.

Would it have been really nice to see some AT-Guns instead? Well yes, because for the typical Bolt Action and/or Chain of Command gamer AT-Guns are much more useful than howitzers. Maybe someday soon we will get both AT-Guns and Howitzers.

Of course there is already the US equivalent of the two pounder in the WIP queue.

I'm hoping the 37 mm M3 will be followed up by a 57 mm M1 / 6-pounder kit, which would be an excellent excuse to do a 2-pounder as well...

You and a many others.

The thing about this AT-Gun is that it can be marketed as an American or British AT-Gun because the 57mm gun M1 was a very close copy of the British QF 6-Pdr. It would be very easy for Rubicon Models to catch two fish with only one hook with this plastic sprue. By making the sprue with the option to assemble either the British QF 6-Pdr or the American 57mm gun M1, this would make it very marketable and popular. And knowing Rubicon Models, maybe they would add the extra bits to make the American Paratrooper version of the 57mm gun M1. Lots of potential for this as a model kit.

And its not like Rubicon Models has not already done something like this before. They did something like this with their Jeep kit. Both American and Commonwealth model kits have the same plastic jeep sprue, but they different crew figures.

The prototype of our British 25 pdr gun with limber is finally done!
Will make some minor update to ease assembly later.

By repeated requests from you, we are adding a 17pdr gun to our QF 25pdr gun plastic kit,
adding a QF 17/25 pdr "Pheasant" build option.  You now have 3 gun barrels to choose from.
