Something new for the Allies - GMC CCKW 2.5t 6x6 Cargo Truck!
A back end teaser view...

Ver< nice Vehicle.
-
Thе GMC CCKW was a 2½ ton 6×6 US Army cargo truck that saw heavy service in both World War II and the Korean War. The original "Deuce and a Half", it formed the backbone of the famed Red Ball Express that kept Allied armies supplied as they pushed eastward after the Normandy invasion.
The CCKW came in many variants, including open or closed cab, long wheel base (LWB 353) and short (SWB 352), and over a score of specialized models. It began to be phased out with the deployment of the 6×6 M35 in 1950, but remained in active US service until the mid-1960s.
The name CCKW comes from GMC model nomenclature:
"C", designed in 1941
"C", conventional cab
"K", all-wheel drive
"W", dual rear axles
By the end of production in 1945, 562,750 CCKWs in all variants had been built, a total second only to the “Jeep” ...the “Jeep”!!!!
Our objective is to accurately create the CCKW will the following specifications:
- a 2 sprue plastic kit in 1/56 (28mm) scale
- option for a folded down windshield
- option for a MG gun ring
- option with and without front winch
- optional canvas top for the driver cabin
- optional canvas top for the rear trunk in open and close condition
- rear truck tailgate in open and close condition
Here is some more front view of the GMC truck...

Another great choice of subject - and it looks good too.
Hopefully a British truck will follow at some point...
-
Looks good. Did they make any variants for it? Or was it pretty much a troop/cargo transporter?
-
lots of variants, tractor truck, tanker, tipper, recovery, office, workshop and more.
-
Don't forget : GMC Leroy and DUKW
-
We had come across something interesting, and would like some advice!
Seems like an average person is not able to man a Ma Deuce on the GMC truck even if he is standing on the passenger seat.

By digging further on the internet on Ma Deuce firing position, here is what we have...

Is this the possible positions for the gunner?

Remember the 50 cal was to be used for anti aircraft protection, the fact that it chewed up soft skin vehicles and troops was a bonus :o . So the gunner would be lower in the truck with the barrel pointed sky ward, and the ring mount made tracking aircraft much easier than a post mount . By the time these vehicles got into combat in Europe the Luftwaffe was hardly the threat it was in the Blitzkrieg . In fact if you look at most US WW2 vehicles , you'll notice the machine guns are mounted this way . A lot of British/ Canadian tankers removed the 50 from the Sherman as it was not needed for aircraft and it clogged the hatch if you had to bail out . That's where all the Canadian Universal carriers got their 50s from :) Note : your 1st picture is a Vietnam/ Grenada era MUTT jeep not WWW2
-
I'm not sure the relative dimensions are correct. I think the .50 cal gunner stood higher than that. Here's a sequence showing a relatively petite woman firing the .50 cal on a GMC - even allowing for the ring out being lower than it should be, it still looks as though an average man could fire the weapon while standing on the seat.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N6pOB-CGBA
There are also photos of the .50 cal gunner sitting on the roof, but obviously that's not possible if the roof is down.
-

Actually, the Canadians seem to have liked their .50 cals. British doctrine was to remove them because AA defence was supposed to be handed by specialised vehicles, but you still see some on British Shermans in Normandy. 3rd RTR (part of 11th Armoured) traded their .50 cals with 8th Armoured Brigade, who fitted them to their Carriers and Scout Cars.
-
Thanks for the initial comments. Interesting! The gun mount on the video seems to have been lowered when compared to the original specifications.
From our 4th reference photo (the GMC truck), the gunner seems to be stepping on the dashboard and leaning towards the back of the ring to get balance while holding the .50 cals.
Another possibility is there are boxes or additional items on top of the seat so that the gunner can stand taller.
Anyway, this is why we post this for more comments.
;)
-
I think further research is needed. It seems unlikely that the gunner was unable to aim the .50 cal at ground targets. That said, the first of your test designs looks better to me.
-
If I was in the truck, is be standing in a position similar to your 2nd test picture.
-
I agree with the second pose as well. You'd be able to balance yourself easier than in the first pose, especially if traveling cross country
-
While we are still investigating the standing pose of our gunner, here are some images of our 3D prototype of the GMC CCKW:

The jerrycan is fixed. It will be Q1/16...

Here are some snapshots of the GMC Truck crew using 3D printing... Should include the driver in 1 pose, and a gunner with 2 poses (1 body & head plus two set of legs and arms).

Wow, these figures are a huge improvement on your initial ones.

The initial ones are temporary measure with third party help... All these new ones are now our own studio work! You definitely will see a big differences!!

Looks good - very nice details :)

Agreed - he looks very natural, but also appropriately 'chunky'.

It took us a long while to get this right, thus delaying all our current projects with figures involved!
:(
-
Well it was worth it. If this is going to be your established figure style, then it's a good one.

Our truck driver now becomes a gunner! A mix and match test to see how well the prototype figures will match with our existing vehicles... not bad at all!

Really nice looking figures . I like the optional poses for the gunner figure . I hope you can give us this type of option in other vehicle and crew figures you produce .

That's the plan for our "all new" projects. Current and on-going projects can't be done because of production schedule, but will try to do an add-on along the line.
We had spend over six months just to get familiar with our new digital sculpting workstations, and we are starting to see some positive results. 2016 will be an exciting year with a new product range to complement our current vehicle range!
:D
-
Had one lucky oppertunity to be in an halftack at Staverton airdrome oh so long ago, she had a pulpit the firing position would be close to 2.
-
The figure looks good in the M 10 . But he's not really the gunner , HE sits further forward in the turret . The seat your guy is on is for the commander or loader , I forget who sat on which side ::) . But with a little work with razor saw and file I'm sure I could get a full 3 man crew in that turret . All I need is 3 seated lower bodies , well done Rubicon
-
He's on the loader's seat - the gunner sat in the forward left side of the turret. The driver figure is going to be useful as a tank crewman. The gunner figure is wearing webbing and ammo pouches, which was rare on a tank crewman.

Don't be too serious! This is a "mix-and-match" test to see how well our figures with go with other vehicles other than the truck. We only have 3 prototype figures, therefore not much choices!
;)
-
The point is - if you want these figures to be more versatile, leave the webbing off. But they look great as they are.

This is the GMC CCKW dedicated sprue. Still in TS1 stage awaiting test fit and assembly report. Much work have to be done on it, but overall quality is satisfactory.

It's hard to discern the detail properly on that light coloured plastic, but from what I can see it's good. And the figures are noticably better than your earlier figures. Looks good!

It is a long learning curve to make good figures, technically. 3D print and plastic from the actual mould are very different. Need to make adjustments as we progress. ;)

Looks good.

The crew looks really good!

This is our painted TS1 plastic GMC Truck. There are still some minor touch up work needed to improve ease-of-assembly, other than that, almost done!

Very nice.

I really like the crew. I think it was a good move introducing your next generation figures with this truck, as it's likely to be used a lot with Warlord figures, and they will go together well. Personally, I prefer the look of the Studebaker, but I'll be buying both.
-
Why the delay with the New Releases?
We take extra care and attention to our new digital sculpts!
From the image below, you can see significant improvements on details between our TS1 & TS3 (Test Shots) sprues!
We have basically replaced all the TS1 figure parts with a new digital sculpt, and thus a new mould!
3D prototype sometimes will only give you some idea how the plastic will come out, but with figures, how the moulds are made is also a key factor.
Trail and error is the only way to go... so not until we reach our standard of quality, we will not release new products the come with figures!

The improvement is very clear. Can you also add the helmet strap?
I am still happy to wait until you are satisfied with the standard of your figures before you release the kits that will include them.
-
The improvement is very clear. Can you also add the helmet strap?
Might be too late for that, green stuff always will do that for you! ;)
Want to release these ASAP as these few projects had been with the studio too long... guys need new projects to keep them excited!
:D
-
The new heads look fantastic , well done . Don't worry about the helmet straps Pinky , I've never seen a WW2 movie in which American soldiers ever used them , lol .
-
Looks good !
Leave the straps off !
-
Don't worry about the helmet straps Pinky , I've never seen a WW2 movie in which American soldiers ever used them , lol .
They certainly don't seem to have used the strap to keep their helmets on, but it was very common to loop the strap over the front rim. WL have depicted this on many of their plastic GI heads. It just adds a bit more interest to the helmet.
-
That's true . Usually the plastic liner strap over the front rim of the helmet . Having worn helmets in the 70s , the tin pot tended to bounce off if not secured when you were running or falling on the ground , and you usually landed on it , ouch !. The over sight can be fixed ( by those of us who care ) by GS , very thin plastic strip , or even just a thin line of paint . Should look ok for troops hidden in vehicle cabs . Hopefully Rubicon can add the straps to later releases
-
This is a WIP screenshot of the upcoming GMC/US6 decal sheet. Almost all new releases had their own new design.
Each sheet is created using vector graphics software to make sure they are of the highest quality. Even though you
might not see the lettering on the final product because they are scaled down to such a small size; but each decal is
thoroughly researched and is created as close to as the real one.

Can I just say that I really don't want to assemble serial numbers from individual numbers. Can we have some complete numbers too?

Still working on this one... the decal will include complete numbers. The individual ones are for vehicle markings, such as bumper codes.

That's good! BTW - I think it's "Convoy Lead Vehicle".

Looks good :)

This is the finished decal sheet shared by both the GMC and Studebaker (US6 & BM-13) trucks.
Comments welcome... will send to our printer coming Tuesday!

Do you think you'll ever do passengers for the back? Maybe in a resin blister pack?
Could be a great way of adding some character to it. Could have some chatting, smoking, writing letters, playing cards, inspecting weapon, snoozing, etc
Perry miniatures do them in blocks and they work well.

Elias ideas of Gi`s Chatting, smoking, writing letters , playing cards, inspecting weapons, snoozing etc is a great idea .I`d love to see all nations get this treatment for your machines. Some in blocks for back of lorries but most lose so as to be used in back and at camp. This is a prime ambush time and if figures are changed to combat as it strikes, it is a real plus and looks so cool in photographs.

Is there any chance of there being a steel rear body and steel cab being made as an add on set?
