Work In Progress / Re: Jagdpanzer 38 Hetzer - NEW Expansion Kit?? 171218
« on: December 20, 2017, 07:25:24 am »
I posted the following during the Panzer IV discussion. If this is the sort of thing you have in mind I'll be very pleased.

I wonder whether it would be possible to modify it via an expansion kit to make an Ausf C. I think 3 small pieces would correct the turret (new mantlet and side access hatches). The hull machine gun would need to be removed and replaced with a plate that is flat with the driver's. The real tanks were a centimetre different in width (nothing in 1/56 scale).

I just don’t get the hatred for this on here and the Facebook pages.

Hatred is a strong word. People are usually expressing disappointment with Rubicon's choice of subject. My support for this choice is more about supporting the concept than this particular vehicle. Panzer 38(t) Ausf A being more numerous and fought for a long period.

I bow to your great knowledge Pinky. However I think Rubicon's expressed intent to create different variants of their products is to be encouraged. I was particularly interested to see the Panxer IV mentioned in that context.

I'm not usually a supporter of the diversions Rubicon tend to get involved with. However to my understanding this is more than just a prototype, is a vehicle, rather than a fence, and an armoured one at that. It gets a tick from me.

I'd agree with your point Pinky, if these weapons were withdrawn after the campaign in Poland. A PzIV Ausf A would be a case in point. But most of the vehicles that fought for Germany in Poland continued for a long time. Certainly a lot longer than the late war wonder weapons. I suspect the issue is more about the biggest gun and heaviest armour wins. Whereas I am more interested in the historic accuracy of the period and the belief games at this level are more interesting when the infantry isn't dominated. I realise majority opinion measured by sales is going to be the winner however.

Thumbs down then. For me it would have to be a Pz38(t) A model to be of any interest. Manufacturers lack of interest in 1939 vehicles is such a frustration my next purchase is likely to be a WWI flying machine from Wingnut Wings! Admittedly nothing to do with war gaming.

I imagine the tanks could be heavily camouflaged without concern for the hatches/intakes being covered when the main concern was attack from the air and the vehicle's crew not in it. However this doesn't seem the likely situation on the gaming table.

I'm with ripley on this. You may do a good job on this range but we can get these things from other people. It is your expertise and enthusiasm for the vehicles that interests me and I am concerned this diversion will have us waiting longer for the good stuff.

Very interesting. I suspect Rubicon are planning on 4 return rollers. In which case we are looking at a late 1944 tank rather than 1945. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Hopefully when the final product is produced and incorporates advice from Pinky, among others, it will get great reviews.

I confess to some amusement. I think Pz IV Ausf J is a desirable weapon on the wargames table. However you can fight any period of the war without it. It's a pity the same can't be said for Panzer IV Ausf C, a vital and missing variant early in the war Rubicon don't appear interested in. I'll crawl back in my box now!

It would have been easy for Rubicon to put these in the too hard basket. I'm pleased they haven't. However Pinky's point about high detail in one area and not another is valid. Perhaps when Panzer IV kits get another upgrade in the years to come the tracks will get looked at again.

I'd be interested in the first four on this list. The two tanks are particularly important.

I'm with you EWG. Although I think the Sd.Kfz.7 is an interesting vehicle and deserves inclusion by Rubicon it, and many other vehicles, don't really belong in the front line. I sometimes think they should be on a secondary table where they are only likely to be in danger from enemy artillery and tactical aircraft. At 1/56 scale they really shouldn't be mixing it with the opposing infantry and therefore on the primary gaming table unless broken down!

Agreed. A vehicle produced in large numbers that would find a place in any German army of WWII.
